Native Wild Rice
Real wild rice, not the paddy-grown rice from California sold as “wild rice,” is truly wild and hand-harvested. It grows in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Canada and is still gathered in places by Native Americans. Unlike the shiny black grains of the cultivated varieties, the grains of true wild rice are gray and brownish, and they cook in far less time. Delicious parched rice can be purchased from the White Earth Land Recovery Project and is available through Native Harvest (www.nativeharvest.com or 1-888-779-3577). Real wild rice is also available at Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and through www.heritagefoodsusa.com.
